Therefore will not we fear

Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea. Psalm 46:2

Beware of telling God that you will trust in him so long as he keeps your life in this world the way you want it to be. Beware of building your hopes and dreams upon a comfortable life in this world. Beware of railing against the health, wealth, and prosperity gospel but then embracing it on a practical level.

Instead, let us be able to say with the psalmist that we will not fear "though the earth be removed, and the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea." In other words, even if the most permanent structures in our lives were taken out of the way, whether they be human relationships or a job or a place to live or whatever, we should still be able to say, "Therefore will not we fear."

But how do you get there? How do you become this kind of person?

We get there by truly embracing the reality spoken of in verse 1: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." We place our confidence and our hope of peace and comfort, not upon the ultimately moveable structures of this world and this time, but upon the eternally immoveable rock of God himself. Our joy is not to be found in things which will one day pass away, but in God who doesn't.

God's word is always true, and will never be removed or carried into the sea. God's love is never-ending, and will never be removed or carried into the sea. God's power is firm, and will never be removed or carried into the sea. God's purpose is sure, and will never be removed or carried into the sea. God's salvation is sweet, and will never be removed or carried into the sea.

Put your hope in God, Father, Son, and Spirit, and you will be able to truly say: "Therefore, I will not fear."
