Do what you can for Jesus

She hath done what she could. Mark 14:8

Too often the Christian is paralyzed by a perception of what needs to be done, and is overwhelmed by the vastness of the spiritual drought and desolation that is all around them. So much needs to be done, and the reality is that we are just not equipped to do it all. With our paltry talents and our numerous limitations and weaknesses, we are often tempted to retreat back into the shadows and hope all comes out well in the end.

Let us, then, take a lesson from this woman of faith. Our Lord's estimation of her ought to encourage and embolden all of us to do what we can, for that is what she did. She had "an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious" (3), and she gave that to Jesus. And though the crowd around her judged her for it, our Lord's approval was all she needed. And it is all we need. Her service to Jesus is forever enshrined in the gospels. "Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her," and so it is (9).

Brothers and sisters, let us do what we can for Jesus today.
