Christ over all

Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. Eph. 1:20-23

Christ is exalted not only above, but "far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come." How many earthly kings have taken the throne, only to be toppled from it in a short period of time? Or how many have ruled, but in name only? This is not the case with Christ. His throne is exalted far above the reach of any competitor. His dominion is sure and secure. It is eternal. It is unshakable and unchangeable. He is Lord of lords and King of kings, the Lord our God who reigns omnipotent over all.

Not only is he exalted, but he is exalted "to be the head over all things to the church." This rule over the church is not for her to be oppressed but blessed, for the church "is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all." As Paul will later say of the husband and his care for his wife, no man has ever hated his own body, but nourishes and cherishes it, as the Lord does the church (Eph. 5:29). Christ loves and cherishes the church, and he does so as the one who fills all in all, who exercises perfect sovereignty over all things for the good of the church.

Brother and sister, you belong to Christ and thus to his church. You are a part of his fulness, his body, and you can be sure that he loves you and cares for you. And your position in him is secure. There is no enemy that can threaten the rule of Christ for and over his church, and that makes your position in him to be completely and eternally safe.
