The Sanctity of Human Life

Today is the 35th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion in the United States. And, although the number of abortions performed in the U.S. has significantly declined in recent years, it is still a tragedy of inexpressible proportions to know that, in the U.S. alone, an estimated 1.2 million children are being killed by abortion every year (roughly the population of Salt Lake City). The statistics say that worldwide the lifetime average is now about 1 abortion per woman. In the U.S., an estimated 43% of all women will have at least 1 abortion by the time they are 45 years old.

I am very thankful that President Bush officially proclaimed Sunday, January 20th, to be Sanctity of Human Life Day. I am also thankful that thousands of pro-life advocates have labored tirelessly--this week and every week--to bring greater awareness, education, and ethical awareness to the people of our nation.

And, yet, I cannot help but be reminded that we are told "righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people" (Proverbs 14:34). May we continue to reach out to the hurting mothers who feel that abortion is their only solution; may we continue to provide adoption and care for those courageous mothers who choose to have their child anyway; may we continue the battle for the right of unborn children to live--and may God continue to have mercy on our nation, despite our selfishness and rebellion against Him.
