Consider One Another

In our human nature there is a tendency to think only about ourselves, but this verse says we are to “consider  one another.”  We are members of the same family and partners in the same work.  Someone has said, “The Bible knows nothing of solitary religion.”  We must be involved with other people and be concerned for their welfare   We are admonished to provoke unto love and to good works.  It is not enough that we love and are engaged in good works, it is also our responsibility to encourage and stimulate others in these matters as well.  Certainly if we desire to provoke to good works, our purpose should not be to simply point out how others might be neglecting their duty, but to actually get them excited about doing it,  so we must approach them in a humble and loving way.

Further, we are admonished not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together.  It is important that we hear the preaching of the gospel, and to have our minds renewed by scriptural instruction regarding our daily walk.  But this passage indicates there is also another reason for not forsaking the assembly.  When we fail to be present, we are not only missing a spiritual blessing, but we are failing to consider others.  Our very presence in the worship service is an encouragement to others.  We are showing our love for the Lord, His word and His people by being present when the church meets. If the assembly is forsaken, we can easily be distracted by the things of the world and grow cold  toward the church and its members.  May we all seek to be an encourager by coming regularly to the house of the Lord and encouraging others to good works.
