When They Saw the Child, They Worshiped
“And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh” (Matthew 2:11).There is a library full of lessons in this single verse of Scripture. From this text we learn about true faith, the purpose of our existence, the nature of worship, and the supremacy of Christ. The coming of Christ is not about Mary, it is not about mangers, and it is not about magi. The coming of Christ is all about Christ! Christ is the focus of Matthew’s narrative and of the magi’s worship. The purpose of the star was to lead to Jesus, not distract from Jesus.Today all the trappings of Christmas too often serve more as a distraction than as a worship-pointer. Don’t let anything draw your attention away from the One to whom all worship belongs.
