We recently enjoyed having Tedd Tripp visit us here at Cincinnati Church. When I put together a series of messages on the Christian home several years ago, I found his book Shepherding A Child’s Heart stood out above others that I researched. Dr. Tripp views things from a biblical perspective and does not incorporate the humanistic thinking of our day to which so many writers have resorted.
Rather than providing techniques to control outward behavior, he focuses on the heart from which actions are motivated. He does an excellent job of helping parents to examine their goals which often are influenced by the thinking which is prevalent in the culture of our day.
He emphasizes the fact that from their earliest days they are to be taught they are creatures made in the image of God and are accountable to him.
Although he has been severely criticized for his stand by some who reject the absolute authority of scripture, Dr. Tripp faithfully sets forth the teaching that children must be corrected by use of the rod. And he gives excellent counsel on how to deal with them as they mature. As stated in his book, “I hear people responding to their school-aged children as if they were 3-year-old kids. They bark commands. Their children are hearing the same old orders but not growing in discernment and understanding. They are not being equipped for the next stage of development—the teenage years.” He gives insight on how parents can use the scriptures in training their children to make the right decisions.
Dr. Tripp travels extensively both in the United States and abroad. Let us pray that the Lord will continue to open doors for him and bless his efforts to set for the biblical principles which are so needed in our day.
