There are many references in the scriptures to the fact that God’s children need to be fed so they can grow and be strong and stable in His service.
Paul admonished the elders at Ephesus to feed the church. In his first epistle Peter instructed the elders to “feed the flock of God which is among you,” and admonished God’s children to “desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.” Paul also told Timothy that if he would take heed to the doctrine that his ministry would prove to be beneficial to “them that hear thee.”
As we look at these passages some conclusions can be drawn. First, it is the duty of the ministers to preach the Word so that the flock can be fed. Certainly then gospel ministers join with Paul in rejoicing when the Word is received not as the word of men but of God.
Secondly, if the flock is to be fed they must be present to hear the Word when it is preached.
How easy it is to make excuses for not being present for the preaching of the Word. Of course there are legitimate excuses such as sickness, and jobs in the medical field, and others that might require a person to miss church. But how many times are the excuses only that — excuses.
So many voices are heard in this information age that there must be attendance to the Word and the preaching of it that our minds may be renewed and not conformed to the world.
