“And the angel said unto them, Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10-11).
In the troubled world in which we live there seems to be little good news. We read of the ongoing conflicts among nations, the continued threat of terrorism, a struggling economy, lost jobs, broken marriages, rebellious teenagers — and the list goes on.
But 2,000 years ago an angel appeared and declared I am bringing good tidings, good news; and that news is still good news today. A Savior was born who is Immanuel–God with us–Jesus Christ our Lord.
Fallen man desperately needed a savior. Because of his sinful state he could not save himself or even assist in his own salvation. He was incapable of making things right with God. But Jesus Christ came to do what man could not do for himself, he came to save his people from the sins. He died for sinners, he redeemed them; by his redemptive work their sin is put away. What good news!
And as God’s redeemed people live in a world which is not a friend of God, and the struggles of life are difficult to bear, the reminder of the Savior’s grace and blessing is needed on a daily basis. The fact is God’s people can have great joy in the Savior, even when the circumstances of life are challenging and there are trials on every hand; they can rejoice in the Savior who is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
