The Birth of Jesus

Posted by: Lasserre on December 17, 2009

mary_joseph.jpgMatthew begins his gospel by tracing the human linage of Christ from Abraham and then gives an account of his birth.

He describes how Joseph was perplexed when he discovered that Mary was with child but that he was then assured by the angel of the Lord “that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.” There was no reason to fear to receive his wife, the child she would deliver was no ordinary child and his conception was by divine power.

The Savior Is Prophesied

More than four thousand years of history had rolled by. The biblical account of those years recorded births and deaths, joys and sorrows, victories and defeats.

Finally the greatest event in all of history was unfolding.

This great event was the fulfillment of the words of the prophet that a virgin would be with child and one of the names given him would be Emmanuel, which means God with us.

What a remarkable thing! It is beyond our ability to comprehend but by faith we embrace it. God with us. God the Creator coming to live on the earth he created. The God-man, Jesus Christ, here on the earth to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and to set at liberty those that are bruised.

This is an excerpt from the December issue of our publication the Baptist Witness.
