Rejoice Evermore, pt 1 of 2

We are living in troubled times.
In recent days we have seen the stock market take several unprecedented nosedives and markets around the world have suffered tremendous losses. Several major banks and Wall Street firms have failed. The economy is in turmoil and the future doesn’t look very promising. Yet we come to this admonition in the book of 1 Thessalonians: “Rejoice evermore.” (5:16).
The first response may be, “That is impossible. How can I rejoice when so many things are going wrong?” But as we look at the Word of God we see that it is possible to still rejoice, and in fact we are commanded to do so. We learn that our joy must be in the Lord and not dependent on the immediate circumstances we may be encountering.
Believing in God’s sovereignty makes the difference. If we see that He is on the throne and that nothing is out of His control, we can still rejoice. We frequently do not understand how God is working for His glory and for the good of His people, but we can rejoice to know that He is always doing so.
