Hurricanes, storms, and troubles

Posted by: Lasserre on September 3, 2008

hurricane.jpgWe are thankful that the devastation from Hurricane Gustav was much less than predicted. Now with Hanna and Ike moving toward the U.S. there are still reminders of how much we need God’s mercy and protection from such powerful storms and how much we need Him to cope with the ongoing troubles of life.

There are sometimes storms of trials and affliction that all but sweep us off our feet.  It is then we learn how frail we are and how much we need God’s grace to sustain us.

David acknowledged that God had been his refuge in his day of trouble. Three years ago, shortly after Katrina hit New Orleans with such devastation, I preached a message from Psalm 59:16, a text in which David says he will sing aloud because God has been his defense and refuge. I emphasized the fact that trouble cannot separate us from God’s love and is used to teach us some valuable lessons.

May we find the steel-like strength and indestructible joy in God that David expresses in this psalm, even in the middle of life’s uncertainties and tragedies:

“I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble” (Psalm 59:16).
