I just returned from teaching at a Christian summer camp in Maryland. Although there were many healthy and enjoyable and relaxing activities, I was especially refreshed by the worship services we enjoyed together.
The theme for the services is succinctly summarized with the simple truth “it’s all about Jesus.” This foundational truth is expressed by Jesus himself, in Matthew 16:24, when he tells them “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself [Luke adds “daily”], and take up his cross, and follow me.”
What is given as the motivation for the horribly painful and difficult work of daily self-denial? Jesus delivers the entire incentive package in one word: “Me.” If you want me — if you want to come after me — then it will require the spiritual discipline of self-crucifixion. But it will be well worth it! Because you will be drawing nearer to Jesus, following hard on his precious heels.
Too often we get sidetracked in the Christian life and begin to think it is all about rules, or saying “no” to things we want to do, or serving others. But Christianity is all about Christ.
Jesus is the motivation, and Jesus is the goal. We want to be near Him and we want to be like Him.
It’s all about Jesus.
